Munster GAA measure impact of coaching investment
Repucon Consulting was commissioned by Munster Council GAA to undertake coaching return on investment analysis across its provincial game development activities. The review of 2023 coaching investment by Munster Council GAA is a follow up study to similar research undertaken in 2011, 2015 and 2019. The study included analysis of survey reponses from 2,347 parents, 1,419 second level students and 343 clubs across the province. A quota per county was set to ensure a representative sample from each of the six Munster counties.

The methodology for the 2023 review is consistent with the approach employed in these previous studies. The approach employed by Repucon Consulting generates a value model reflecting the wider impacts that arise from the coaching interventions. These include outcomes such as physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, individual development, social and interpersonal development in addition to a player’s sports development.
The coaching return on investment assessment programme, extending from 2011 to 2023, is a longitudinal study assessing the impact of coaching investment by Munster Council GAA into annual province wide coaching. It highlights the value of the coaching outputs compared to the value of the resources that may have been invested elsewhere e.g. capital investment projects. It provides the basis for the calculation of a benefits to costs ratio. For example, a ratio of 1:5 indicates that an investment of €1 into provincial coaching structures delivers €5 of coaching value.
This enables direct data comparisons and identification of any emerging trends from the four studies. The coaching return on investment study is based on the creation of a socio-economic measurement system to value the coaching outputs of Munster Council GAA. This includes its coaching channels such as the Games Development structures and the activity of clubs and schools.
